Congressman Walsh: A Key Leader in the Creation of The Technology Garden
This newsletter has been devoted to celebrating the indelible effect on Syracuse and the Greater Central New York Region of outgoing Congressman James T. Walsh. While Walsh’s 25th Congressional District covers much more than just the city of Syracuse, his leadership and commitment to our urban core has had an immense impact not only on the rehabilitation of vacant structures, but also in support of our region’s strong entrepreneurial spirit. In particular, the dedication of Congressman Walsh led directly to the creation and development of The Technology Garden and the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP).
A project of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, The Tech Garden is a technology business incubator that provides entrepreneurial support to start up and emerging technology-oriented enterprises. To date, The Tech Garden has provided business development assistance to over 200 small technology enterprises and houses 27 companies that employ 88 individuals, with a total payroll of just over $4.4 million. Of these companies, 17 are clean/renewable energy development or implementation businesses.
Reflecting Congressman Walsh’s commitment to downtown revitalization, funds were allocated to situate the 33,000 sq. ft. incubator on the former site of a collapsed downtown parking garage. Located in the heart of downtown Syracuse, directly next to the AXA Equitable Towers, The Tech Garden would never have become a reality without the over $4 million in construction and operational funds that were obtained by the Congressman.
In addition, the very successful NASA sponsored SATOP program was operated out of The Tech Garden for a number of years. Thanks to the program funding secured by Congressman Walsh, SATOP, which provided advanced engineering support for the region’s small businesses, was able to aid 650 area enterprises with their specific engineering needs. A nationwide program, SATOP, in total, fostered over $571 million in economic impact with the estimated creation of 1,370 jobs.
In light of the resounding support and commitment from the Congressman, the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with The Technology Garden, has announced its intention to name The Tech Garden’s Innovation Portal in his honor. The Innovation Portal, The Tech Garden’s central corridor, acts as a physical and psychological connector that encourages collaboration and mutual support between The Tech Garden’s resident businesses. While support for The Tech Garden highlights just a fraction of the Congressman’s dedication to his district, its development is indicative of the foresight and perseverance that Congressman Walsh has continually brought to our region’s business community.
