Workforce & Diversity Initiatives

Having a skilled, literate, technically-proficient workforce is the factor that contributes the most to a region’s output, income, and productivity. At the same time, workplace diversity has gone beyond being a social responsibility or legal requirement, and is increasingly an economic imperative.
The Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce is involved in a number of workforce and diversity initiatives, including workforce attraction and retention programs such as the Green Jobs Task Force. The Chamber also develops and implements programs that impact the retention and economic position of various population segments (e.g., our aged 50+ population).
The Chamber supports workplace literacy through programs that include the Contextualized Workplace Literacy Program (for our immigrant population), and the Onodaga County Literacy Coalition (improving literacy throughout the community). The Chamber conducts workforce research and analysis to forecast current and future workforce trends, and occupational supply and demand.
The Chamber is involved with a number of initiatives aimed at skilled workforce development, through a workforce education program for our region’s students, from 7th grade to college, and also works on sector-specific workforce development in existing and emerging sectors.
In alliance with regional partners, the Chamber promotes diversity and inclusion by developing and implementing programs, activities and taskforces that will enhance the appreciation for and the understanding of the value of diversity and inclusion in the workforce and the community as a whole.
Together, the Chamber’s many initiatives are helping build the skilled and diverse workforce that will help ensure the region’s success in the 21st century, global economy.
